Session Duration

A user engagement metric (part of GA4 metrics) used in semantic analysis.

Session Duration is a key user engagement metric used in analytics platforms, measuring the average length of time a user remains engaged during a visit or session. Alongside other behavioral signals like scroll depth and bounce rate, it provides implicit user feedback on content quality and relevance.
In semantic research, Session Duration is used to diagnose gaps in content coverage. A low Session Duration, especially when paired with low page depth, suggests that visitors were sufficiently interested to stick around momentarily but did not explore further. This often signals a lack of Topic Coverage—meaning the current content doesn’t cover all relevant sub-topics or angles related to the query’s semantic cluster. The actionable step here is to add content modules or internal links to fill those semantic gaps.
