A featured snippet is a special result where Google shows a short extract from one web page, highlighted near the top of the results page, because it appears to answer the searcher’s question directly. It usually appears as a paragraph, a list or a table, with a link to the source page. It has been nicknamed “position zero”, and it was one of the first answer-engine features in search, long before AI Overviews.

How it works

Google’s systems decide automatically whether a query benefits from a featured snippet and which passage to show. There is no markup that requests one. Google’s documentation explains how site owners can opt out instead: the nosnippet rule blocks snippets, a data-nosnippet attribute excludes parts of a page and max-snippet limits snippet length.

Google patents give a view of the selection logic. The patent on multi-source extraction and scoring of short query answers describes comparing a candidate passage from a top result with passages from other results, and predicting an accuracy score based on how far the sources agree. If the score clears a threshold, the passage can be shown as a short answer. Answers that match what other reputable pages say are more likely to qualify.

How it’s used in SEO and marketing

  • SERP feature analysis: featured snippets reveal informational intent and the format Google expects (definition, steps, comparison table).
  • Content formatting: a concise answer of a sentence or two directly under a question-style heading, followed by detail, suits both snippets and AI answer extraction.
  • Opportunity finding: queries where you rank in the top results but another site holds the snippet, using SERP APIs such as DataForSEO that report snippet ownership.
  • Measuring zero-click impact: snippets can answer the question on the results page, so impressions may rise while clicks do not. See zero-click search.

Example

For “what is entity salience”, a page has a long introduction before defining the term. The team adds an H2 “What is entity salience?” followed by a two-sentence definition consistent with Google’s documentation and other reputable sources, then the detail. The passage is now easy to lift as a snippet, and the same self-contained structure helps AI systems quote it.

Limitations and things to watch

  • You cannot force a featured snippet, and the snippet holder for a query can change frequently.
  • Snippets can reduce clicks for simple facts; consider which answers you want to give away in full.
  • Google can show snippet text that loses context; check how your passage reads out of its page.
  • AI Overviews now answer many queries that used to show featured snippets, so track both.
