Zero-click Search

In shortA search that ends without the user clicking any result, because the answer was shown on the results page or in an AI response.

A zero-click search is one where the user does not click through to any website. The query might be answered directly on the results page by a featured snippet, knowledge panel, calculator, weather box or AI Overview, or the user might give up or search again. In AI assistants, most of the journey can happen inside the conversation.

How it works

Many SERP features are designed to satisfy simple needs on the page. Factual, single-answer queries, such as the height of a building or a company’s CEO, are often answered straight from the Knowledge Graph; MLforSEO’s lessons describe how Google’s programmer model turns such questions into lookups. Generative answers extend this to longer, more complex questions.

Measuring zero-click behaviour requires clickstream data. SparkToro’s 2024 study, based on Datos panel data, found that just under 60% of Google searches in the US ended without a click to any result.

How it’s used in SEO and marketing

  • Keyword prioritisation: discounting traffic forecasts for queries dominated by answer boxes or AI Overviews.
  • Visibility goals: some queries are worth targeting for brand exposure and recall even when they rarely send clicks.
  • Measurement: tracking impressions, mentions and citations alongside clicks, because influence without a click never appears in referral data.
  • Content design: answering the simple question clearly for the snippet, then offering the depth, tools or comparisons that justify a click.

Example

A query such as “how many tablespoons in a cup” is answered in a box at the top of the page; a recipe site may rank first and still get few clicks. A query such as “best tablespoon measuring set for baking” shows product results and reviews, and leads to more clicks. Separating these two types in a keyword universe changes which pages deserve investment.

Limitations and things to watch

  • Zero-click does not mean zero value. MLforSEO calls one form of it “zero-click influence”: the decision is shaped inside an AI answer, and the visit may come days later as direct traffic (see dark AI traffic).
  • Figures vary by study, device, country and method, so compare like with like.
  • CTR curves built before AI Overviews are less reliable for forecasting.
