Google Colab

In shortGoogle's free, browser-based Python notebook that runs code on Google's servers, so you can use ML scripts without installing anything.

Google Colaboratory, usually called Colab, is a hosted Jupyter notebook service. You open a notebook in your browser, run Python code in cells and see the results underneath, with the computing done on Google’s machines. It is free to start, includes access to GPUs and TPUs within limits, and saves notebooks to Google Drive, which makes it the delivery platform for most MLforSEO practicals.

How it works

  • Cells: a notebook mixes code cells and text cells, so a tutorial can explain each step next to the code that runs it.
  • Runtime: when you connect, Colab gives you a temporary virtual machine with common libraries such as pandas and scikit-learn already installed. Extra packages are added with !pip install.
  • Files: you can upload CSVs, mount Google Drive or read Google Sheets directly.
  • Secrets: API keys can be stored in the Secrets panel instead of being pasted into the code.
  • Hardware: switching the runtime to a GPU speeds up transformer models and embeddings.

Runtimes are temporary. When a session disconnects or times out, installed packages and uploaded files are lost unless you saved them to Drive.

How it’s used in SEO and marketing

  • Running ready-made notebooks for fuzzy matching, redirect mapping, keyword clustering and topic modelling.
  • Calling APIs such as Google Cloud Natural Language, the OpenAI API, DataForSEO or PyTrends.
  • Sharing a repeatable analysis with a client or colleague as a single link.
  • Prototyping an automation before moving it to a scheduled environment.

Example

The How to transcribe audio with OpenAI’s Whisper API in Google Colab (Python) tutorial is a typical Colab workflow: install the library, add your API key, upload an audio file, run the transcription cell and download the text file, all inside one shared notebook.

Limitations and things to watch

  • The free tier has usage limits and idle timeouts, and GPU availability is not guaranteed. Paid plans add more compute.
  • Colab is a poor fit for jobs that must run on a schedule; use a server, Cloud Run or GitHub Actions for those.
  • Be careful with notebooks from unknown sources: running a cell executes the code with access to anything you connect.
  • Pin library versions in notebooks you depend on, because the default runtime is updated regularly.
