Python

In shortA free, readable programming language and the default choice for data analysis, machine learning and SEO automation scripts.

Updated 24 Oct 2026· 2 min read

Python is a general-purpose programming language known for its plain, readable syntax. It has become the standard language for data science and machine learning, which is why almost every MLforSEO practical, from fuzzy matching to entity extraction, comes with a Python notebook. You do not need to be a developer to use it: most SEO tasks need a few dozen lines that you can adapt from an existing script.

How it works

Python code is run by an interpreter, line by line, so you can test small pieces and see results immediately. Its strength for marketers is the ecosystem of free libraries:

  • pandas for working with tables such as keyword exports, crawls and Search Console data.
  • scikit-learn for classic machine learning: clustering, classification and evaluation.
  • spaCy, NLTK and Hugging Face Transformers for language processing.
  • requests and API client libraries for calling services such as the OpenAI API, DataForSEO or Google’s APIs.
  • RapidFuzz, BERTopic and sentence-transformers for matching and semantic analysis.

Most MLforSEO tutorials run in Google Colab, a free browser-based notebook, so there is nothing to install.

How it’s used in SEO and marketing

  • Redirect mapping and 404 fixing with fuzzy matching.
  • Keyword clustering, topic modelling and search intent classification at scale.
  • Pulling data from APIs (Search Console, Google Trends, SERP providers) on a schedule.
  • Generating and validating structured data, meta descriptions and alt text.
  • Submitting URLs to IndexNow and checking indexation.

Example

The 404 and Redirect Mapping with Fuzzy Matching in Google Colab (Python) tutorial loads a list of broken URLs and a list of live URLs, compares them with a string similarity score and outputs a redirect map with the best match for each, ready for a human to check. The same pattern, two lists and a similarity score, solves dozens of SEO tasks.

Limitations and things to watch

  • Libraries change. Pin versions in a notebook you rely on, and re-test old code (several MLforSEO guides were rewritten in 2026 for exactly this reason).
  • Scripts that scrape websites or call unofficial APIs can break without warning.
  • Keep API keys out of shared notebooks; use environment variables or Colab’s secrets panel.
  • Python is only the tool. Framing the task, data and solution correctly matters more than the code.
