AI Rank Tracking (Prompt Tracking)

In shortMonitoring whether and how AI assistants mention or cite your brand by running a fixed set of prompts on a schedule and recording the answers.

AI rank tracking, often called prompt tracking, is the practice of running a fixed set of prompts through AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Mode and AI Overviews on a regular schedule, and recording whether your brand is mentioned, cited or recommended. It is the AI-search counterpart to keyword rank tracking, and a growing category of SEO tools.

How it works

  • Choose prompts: a representative set of questions your customers actually ask, across use cases, comparisons and buying stages, rather than single keywords.
  • Run them repeatedly, across platforms, locations and sometimes personas, because AI answers vary from run to run.
  • Record mentions, citations (with linked URLs), position in the answer, sentiment and which competitors appear.
  • Aggregate into rates and shares over time, such as citation rate or AI share of voice.

MLforSEO’s position is that “rank” is the wrong mental model. In “Your rank tracker is lying to you about AI search”, the argument is that an AI answer has no ordered list of links to occupy: it synthesises claims from several sources and names a few. So the useful metric is citation rate across a fixed prompt set, plus a judgement of citation quality (being named as the best-fit recommendation is worth more than a passing mention).

How it’s used in SEO and marketing

  • Benchmarking AI visibility against competitors for your category.
  • Spotting inaccurate or outdated descriptions of your brand and products.
  • Measuring the effect of entity, content and digital PR work over months.
  • Pairing with analytics signals such as AI referral traffic and the direct-versus-branded-search gap that hints at dark AI traffic.

Example

A B2B software team writes 30 prompts such as “best invoicing tool for freelancers in the UK” and “alternatives to [competitor]”. Each month it runs them in three assistants, scores each answer from zero (absent) to three (recommended first with a link), and tracks the average score and citation rate. A crawl spike in server logs for a new comparison page is watched as a leading indicator before citations change.

Limitations and things to watch

  • Answers are non-deterministic and personalised; small prompt sets and single runs give noisy results.
  • Tools that query models through APIs may see different answers from consumer apps with search and memory.
  • Prompt selection drives the result. Synthetic prompts that no customer would type can flatter or punish you.
  • Tracking shows outcomes, not causes. Pair it with entity, crawl and content diagnostics.
