Agentic Search

In shortSearch where an AI system plans, runs and evaluates many searches itself, then delivers one synthesised answer instead of a list of links.

Agentic search is search carried out by an AI Agent on a person’s behalf. Instead of returning ten links for the user to judge, the system breaks the request into sub-tasks, runs its own searches, evaluates the sources and returns a synthesised answer, sometimes followed by an action such as booking or buying.

MLforSEO’s AI Search Optimisation & Agentic SEO course describes the shift as moving “from assisted retrieval to agent-mediated selection”. The question is who makes the decisions, and when.

How it works

The course compares two models of search:

  • Assisted retrieval (the classic SERP): the system retrieves, and the human selects sources, judges quality and combines the information across tabs.
  • Agent-mediated selection (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode): the system selects sources, scores their credibility and synthesises the answer before the human sees anything.

Under the hood, an agentic system infers the task behind the query, decomposes it into sub-queries (Query Fan-Out), retrieves and filters candidates, extracts individual claims and keeps the ones that several reliable sources agree on. Tools such as Deep Research modes take this further, running dozens of searches over several minutes for one request.

How it’s used in SEO and marketing

  • New success criteria. Content is judged on claim precision, verifiability, structural extractability and consistency with other sources, alongside the human-facing qualities that still win clicks.
  • Content planning by sub-task. The useful question becomes “which sub-task of this query can my page be the best answer for?”
  • Measurement. Rankings do not show selection, so teams track citations and mentions in AI answers (see AI Share of Voice) and AI-influenced traffic.
  • Technical access. Agents must be able to fetch and parse your pages, which brings robots.txt, page weight and structured data into scope.

Example

Someone asks “what marketing strategies work best for SaaS companies?” An agentic system may run five to ten internal searches: what characterises SaaS, which B2B channels matter, performance data, recency checks and so on. Each sub-search has its own pool of candidates, so a single long guide may win one sub-task and lose the others to smaller pages whose headings match each sub-question.

Limitations and things to watch

  • Systems differ and change quickly; describe behaviour you have observed and date it.
  • Agent-mediated answers vary from run to run, so single checks are anecdotes.
  • Human skills still matter: people click, compare and buy, and agents often cite sources people trust.
