Topical Authority

In shortThe perceived depth and trustworthiness of a site on a subject, built by covering a topic and its related entities thoroughly and consistently.

Topical authority describes how strongly a website is associated with a subject, and how much search engines and AI systems trust it on that subject. A site earns it by covering a topic in depth, across its sub-topics and related entities, with useful and original content, and by being recognised by others for that expertise. It is an SEO concept and strategy rather than a single published metric.

How it works

Search engines do not publish a “topical authority score” for websites in general. Google has described a “topic authority” system for news, which helps identify publications with expertise in specific topics or locations. More broadly, Google’s guidance on helpful content and E-E-A-T rewards content that demonstrates experience and expertise. In practice, SEOs use topical authority as shorthand for several signals working together:

  • Coverage: the site addresses the main topic, its sub-topics and the questions around it, often organised as topic clusters with hubs and supporting pages.
  • Entity depth: the important entities and their attributes are covered and connected, which MLforSEO maps with entity extraction and the EAV model.
  • Originality: content adds information gain beyond what already ranks.
  • Internal links and external recognition: links, mentions and citations that connect the site to the topic.

How it’s used in SEO and marketing

  • Content planning: building a topical entity map and filling gaps in a structured order.
  • Measuring coverage: clustering the keywords a site ranks for, then looking at which clusters are strong, weak or missing.
  • Expansion: moving into closely related “edge” topics next to existing strengths rather than unrelated ones.
  • AI search: a site that covers the sub-questions created by query fan-out has more chances to be retrieved and cited.

Example

In MLforSEO’s entity analysis lab, the keywords a finance site ranks for are clustered and plotted on a map. A cluster about business loans sits close to clusters on capital loans and startup finance, while another cluster is far away. To build authority around business loans, the team expands into the neighbouring clusters first, because they share entities and audience needs.

Limitations and things to watch

  • Third-party “topical authority” scores are tool-specific estimates, not Google metrics.
  • Publishing many thin pages to “cover” a topic can backfire; depth and usefulness matter more than page count.
  • Authority on one topic does not transfer automatically to unrelated topics.
