n8n is a workflow automation platform that connects apps, APIs and AI models into workflows you build on a visual canvas, with the option to add JavaScript or Python code where you need it. You can use n8n’s hosted cloud service or self-host it, and it is distributed under its own “fair-code” Sustainable Use License.

How it works

A workflow is a chain of nodes. Trigger nodes start it, for example on a schedule, a webhook, a form submission or an event in another app. Action nodes then do the work: fetch data from an API, transform it, branch on conditions, or send results to a sheet, a database or a chat channel. A code node handles anything the built-in nodes cannot.

For AI work, n8n connects to model providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, and offers AI agent, tool, memory and vector database components based on LangChain concepts. As of October 2026 its documentation also covers connecting agents to MCP servers. These features change quickly, so check the current docs.

How it’s used in SEO and marketing

  • Scheduled data pulls, such as Search Console or SERP data into Google Sheets or BigQuery.
  • Monitoring and alerts, for example a message when rankings or AI citations for priority keywords change.
  • Content pipelines that collect SERP data, draft a brief with an LLM and wait for human approval.
  • Chaining audit steps that already work on their own into one repeatable run.

Example

In MLforSEO’s YouTube SEO audit guide, once each step works on its own you chain them into a workflow in Python, n8n or an agent with tool access. The workflow collects benchmark data, transcripts and comments; analyses them and saves every output to a sheet; pauses for a human checkpoint where someone spot-checks a sample against the source; lets the model draft findings that cite their rows; and leaves prioritisation to you, because only you know the client’s goals, budget and capacity.

Limitations and things to watch

  • The Sustainable Use License is a source-available licence: it permits internal business, personal and non-commercial use, and restricts offering n8n to others commercially. Check the terms before building a client-facing product on it.
  • Self-hosting means you handle updates, security and stored credentials.
  • Each workflow still pays for the APIs and models it calls, and LLM steps need checks for made-up output.
  • For simple jobs, Zapier or Apps Script may be quicker to set up.
