Passage Ranking
In shortScoring individual sections of a page for relevance, so a specific passage deep in a long page can surface for a narrow query.
Passage ranking is the practice of judging the relevance of individual sections, or passages, of a page rather than only the page as a whole. It lets a search system surface a page because one paragraph answers a narrow question well, even if the rest of the page is about something broader. In AI search, passages and chunks have become the main unit that is retrieved and quoted.
How it works
Google announced passage-based ranking in October 2020, saying that understanding passages in addition to whole pages would help find “needle-in-the-haystack” information and improve 7% of search queries across languages as it rolled out. Google’s guide to its ranking systems lists a passage ranking system that identifies individual sections of a page to better understand how relevant the page is to a search. Pages are still indexed as pages; passages are a ranking consideration.
AI search systems go further. They split pages into chunks, embed each one, retrieve chunks by similarity to the query and sub-queries, then re-rank and extract claims. A page can be relevant overall and still lose if no single passage answers the question cleanly.
How it’s used in SEO and marketing
- Structuring long pages with descriptive H2 and H3 headings so each section has a clear purpose.
- Writing self-contained sections that answer one question, with the key fact near the top of the section.
- Adding a table of contents: Google can show sections as jump links, and AI systems get clean, labelled passages to quote.
- Mapping clustered question variants to tight sections rather than separate thin pages.
- Auditing pages for vague or query-restating passages that dilute meaning.
Example
A 3,000-word guide to CRM implementation includes a short section headed “How much does CRM implementation cost for a 50-person company?” with a scoped, sourced figure. That section can match a narrow cost query and be lifted into an AI answer, even though most of the page is about process and vendor selection.
Limitations and things to watch
- Passage ranking does not mean pages are judged without context. Site quality and page-level signals still apply.
- Over-fragmenting content into tiny sections can hurt readability; write for people first.
- Chunk boundaries in AI systems often fall at token limits rather than headings, so keep definitions next to the terms they define.
