Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)

In shortAnswer engine optimisation (AEO) is making content easy for answer engines, from featured snippets to AI assistants, to retrieve, trust and quote as an answer.

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of making your content easy for answer engines to find, understand, trust and quote. An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with an answer instead of a list of links: featured snippets and voice assistants first, and now AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot. AEO overlaps heavily with generative engine optimisation (GEO); the two labels are often used interchangeably.

How it works

MLforSEO describes modern answer engines as a narrowing funnel. A system retrieves candidate pages, cuts them into passages, ranks and filters those passages, and only then selects the claims that go into the answer. Most content is discarded early, long before writing quality is judged. AEO focuses on surviving each stage:

  • Access: the page must be crawlable and indexable, and not blocked for the relevant AI crawlers.
  • Extraction: answers sit in self-contained passages, with the term and its definition kept together, so a chunk still makes sense on its own.
  • Specificity: sentences carry concrete, verifiable facts. MLforSEO’s three-property sentence test treats vague claims as unusable, because there is nothing to extract or cite.
  • Entity clarity: consistent structured data, clear entity names and corroboration from other sources raise the system’s confidence.

How it’s used in SEO and marketing

  • Rewriting key pages so each section answers one question directly, in its first sentence or two.
  • Building FAQ, comparison and how-to content around the questions people actually ask, using People Also Ask data and query fan-out simulation.
  • Tracking AI citations and mentions alongside rankings, since being quoted does not always produce a click.
  • Strengthening entity signals so the brand is recognised as a trustworthy source.

Example

A software company’s pricing page says “flexible pricing to suit businesses of every size”. An answer engine cannot use that sentence. Rewritten as “Plans start at £29 per month for up to five users, with annual billing saving 15%”, the passage now has specific, checkable values that can be lifted into an answer about the product’s price.

Limitations and things to watch

  • AEO is a label for a set of practices, and there is no separate AEO algorithm. Most of it rests on technical SEO, clear writing and entity work you would do anyway.
  • The acronym is used in more than one way. In the AI Search and Agentic SEO course, AEO also appears as “agentic engine optimisation” in the context of preparing sites for AI agents.
  • Answer engines change quickly and report little data, so measure with citation tracking and referral analysis rather than assuming impact.
  • Being quoted can reduce clicks for simple facts; decide which questions are worth answering in full on the page.
