Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO)

In shortOptimising content and brand signals so generative AI search systems retrieve, use and cite you in their answers.

Updated 24 Oct 2026· 2 min read

Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the practice of improving how often, and how accurately, generative AI systems such as ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode use and cite your content. The term was coined in a 2023 research paper and has since become one of the most common industry labels for AI search optimisation, alongside AEO and “AI SEO”.

How it works

Generative engines retrieve candidate passages, filter and re-rank them, extract claims and synthesise an answer that cites a few sources. GEO aims to make your content survive each stage: be crawlable and indexed, be semantically close to the many sub-queries a system generates through query fan-out, and contain specific, verifiable, self-contained claims a system can lift with confidence.

The original paper by Aggarwal and colleagues (KDD 2024) introduced a benchmark, GEO-bench, and reported that some content changes could boost visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%, with effectiveness varying by domain. Adding citations, quotations and statistics were among the stronger methods tested; keyword stuffing was not.

How it’s used in SEO and marketing

MLforSEO teaches the same ground under the names AI search optimisation and agentic SEO. In practice, GEO work includes:

  • Writing in extractable chunks with clear headings, specific numbers and scoped claims.
  • Strengthening entity SEO and consistent structured data so systems can identify your brand.
  • Allowing the right AI crawlers in robots.txt.
  • Building presence on third-party sources that AI systems cite and earning co-citation with recognised authorities.
  • Measuring citations and mentions with prompt tracking rather than rankings alone.

Example

A SaaS page says “our platform offers powerful features for growing teams”. A GEO-minded rewrite states who the product is for, what it does and a specific, sourced figure. The vague version can rank and still never be cited, because a system has nothing precise to extract.

Limitations and things to watch

  • GEO is a new label for work that overlaps heavily with SEO. Crawlability, relevance and authority from traditional SEO still decide whether content is retrieved at all.
  • Generative systems change quickly, and vendor studies on what gets cited date fast. Treat numbers as direction.
  • Results are probabilistic: the same prompt can cite different sources on different runs, so measure across many prompts.
  • Be wary of tactics promising guaranteed AI visibility.
